Living a Diet Life
Worship Leader Chris Orr kicked the morning off by giving away a few of Chris Orr Band CD’s to the students. They then led in a blissful worship by singing “Beautiful News” and “Identity.”
During Celebration today Recreation Director Bowen Behenna announce that Blue Crew won the spirit stick and Mission Director Lauren Crump delcared that Silver Shock won the sprit sledge.
“Totally, Groovy, Awesomely Rad Camp Update Show” began with Sammy (Kirk Bullis) and Tracy (Jill Casey) telling the students the new 80’s word of the day, bodacious. Hair Metal Harry (John Ettinger) revisited the morning show to give two students a wacky hairstyle. Phillip First Baptist Church of Leroy, Al., and Jacey from Providence Baptist Church of Tallaposa, Ga., were the lucky winners. Hair Metal Harry showed his appreciation by giving them a Student Life armband and a Chris Orr CD.
Sammy and Tracy announced that Jerry Williams of Oakland Baptist Church of Corinth, Ms., is youth minister of the day. He was selected because his students sent a crafty letter to the drama team, telling them how incredible he is. Sammy placed a foam crown on his head, which he will wear throughout the day.
Ferrari Fredo (Brian Benkendorfer) came out for his segment of “80’s Tip of the Day.” Fredo encouraged the students to go for the look from Miami Vice by getting a little sun on the elbows, pushing up the sleeves and popping their collars.
The hosts sang “Cellphone,” for the Newsworthy Song of the Day. The song was created after Kyle of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of New Albany, Ms., dropped his phone in the toilet while it was flushing. His mom was on the other end. Students were encouraged to continue to submit funny stories that happen at camp and place them in the mailbox.
Chris Orr Band led the students in worship by singing “You are God Alone” and “Everything” Chris challenged the students to not compartmentalize God, to not separate him from our secular life. “If you’ve accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are one with God and He’s one with You,” Chris said. Allow God to consume everything in your life. Chris asked the students to think about if they are living, breathing, working, breathing, weeping and even laughing with God, and to make that their declaration today. The students continued to sing “Be my Everything.”
Camp Pastor Dave Rhodes opened by giving away devotional CD’s and books to various students. Dave turned the students attention by stating “Life is filled with options.” Dave love’s a diet coke yet today there are so many different options: Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Diet Caffeine Free, Vanilla Coke Zero, Diet Coke with Splenda, Diet Coke Plus. The problem with options is it keeps us from the real thing that satisfies. “It’s ok to drink a Diet Coke but maybe it’s not ok to live a diet life,” Dave said. We want all the tastes with none of the side affects, but in life there are side affects to not experiencing the real thing.
Dave took the students to Luke 14:15-24: a man was preparing for a banquet and invited many guest, however; when it was time to eat, the guests made excuses of why they could not attend. The ma had his servant go throughout the town and bring everyone to make his house full. “I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet,” verse 24. The people either went and dined or were distracted with life.
Dave emphasized “There is a big difference in wanting something and be committed to something.” Being committed means choosing something even when it costs. Dave pointed out that the intended guests were not doing things that were wrong, just wrongly valued. “Will you choose God in the middle of distractions?” Dave asked.
